The oil sketch on the book jacket (above) by F.T.V. Savard of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, shows the burning of the German town of Friesoythe in April, 1944, an incident which is dramatized in the novel.

In 1997, James Bacque left his home in Toronto to live with his wife Elisabeth in a remote cottage in the woods beside Georgian Bay, Ontario, while he worked on his new book, Our Fathers’ War.
